Overview
How a San Francisco BioTech Leader Automated Its Entire Order-to-Cash Cycle
A publicly listed biotechnology company based in San Francisco, manufacturing synthetic DNA and DNA products for customers across a wide range of industries, faced a critical operational challenge. Its two core enterprise systems, Salesforce (SFDC) for CRM and SAP for ERP, operated in complete isolation. Customer master data, orders, invoices, and revenue records had to be manually reconciled between the two platforms, creating delays, errors, and zero real-time visibility for the sales team.
TGH designed and implemented a Boomi-powered, event-driven integration framework that connected Salesforce and SAP in a fully automated, bi-directional synchronisation, transforming the order-to-cash cycle from a manual, error-prone process into a seamless, auditable, and scalable digital workflow.
TGH's Boomi integration framework eliminated the data silos between our Salesforce and SAP systems entirely. Our sales team now has real-time revenue visibility, orders process without manual intervention, and our compliance posture is stronger than ever. This was a true digital transformation.

The Challenge
Six Technical Complexities That Demanded Expert Integration Design
The Salesforce-SAP integration landscape presented a cluster of interconnected technical and business challenges. Each had to be addressed through deliberate architectural decisions rather than quick-fix workarounds, making this engagement a test of both integration engineering depth and business process understanding.
Data Model Alignment Between Salesforce and SAP. The two platforms use fundamentally different data models. Mapping Salesforce Accounts to SAP Business Partners, and SFDC Opportunities/Orders to SAP Sales Orders, required careful field-level transformation logic and validation.
Handling Bi-Directional Data Synchronization. Both systems needed to send and receive data simultaneously. Preventing infinite update loops, managing conflict resolution, and ensuring idempotency across both directions required a sophisticated event-driven design.
Complex SAP Integration Requirements. SAP's integration layer (IDoc, BAPI, RFC) has strict transactional requirements. Building reliable, performant connectors that respected SAP's processing rules while meeting Salesforce's real-time expectations was a core engineering challenge.
Data Quality and Validation Issues. Inconsistent data formats, missing mandatory fields, and legacy records with incomplete information meant robust validation and exception management had to be built into every integration flow from the ground up.
Error Handling and Retry Mechanisms. Enterprise-grade integrations require comprehensive error handling. The solution needed automated retry logic, dead-letter queues for failed records, alerting for critical failures, and full audit trails for every transaction.
Security and Compliance Considerations. As a public company handling sensitive customer and financial data, all integration flows had to meet strict security standards, encrypted in transit, role-based access-controlled, and fully auditable for regulatory compliance purposes.
Our Solution
An Event-Driven Boomi Integration Framework Built for Enterprise-Grade O2C
TGH delivered a modular, event-driven integration architecture on Boomi, purpose-built for the specific complexities of a Salesforce-SAP order-to-cash environment. The solution began with exhaustive end-to-end business process mapping, ensuring every data flow, transformation rule, and exception scenario was understood before a single integration was built.
At the heart of the solution was a bi-directional synchronisation engine handling Customer Master data and Order lifecycle flows in both directions, with built-in validation, error handling, retry logic, and a full audit trail on every transaction. Revenue data integration gave the sales team live financial visibility directly within Salesforce for the first time.
π‘
The modular Boomi framework was designed for reuse and extensibility, every integration component (logging, error handling, retry logic, validation) was built as a shared module, meaning future integration additions require minimal new development effort.
Implementation
A Six-Step Engineering Approach to Salesforce-SAP Integration
Phase 1
Process Mapping & Design
Phase 2
Core Integration Build
Phase 3
Validation & Error Handling
01
End-to-End Business Process Mapping
TGH conducted a comprehensive mapping of the entire Customer Master and Order Lifecycle, from Salesforce account creation through SAP Business Partner creation, order entry, fulfilment, invoicing, and revenue recognition. This produced a definitive integration blueprint before any build began.
02
Event-Driven Integration Design for Customer Master & Order Sync
TGH designed an event-driven architecture using Boomi's scheduler and real-time event triggers, ensuring that any create, update, or delete action in either Salesforce or SAP automatically triggers the corresponding synchronisation in the other system, with full idempotency and loop-prevention logic built in.
03
Modular Boomi Framework: Logging, Error Handling & Retry
A centralised, reusable Boomi process framework was built for logging, error capture, retry orchestration, and alerting. Every integration process consumed these shared modules, ensuring consistent error management, full audit trails, and automated escalation for critical failures across all integration flows.
04
Bi-Directional Sync: Customer Master & Order Integration
The core integration flows were built and validated: Salesforce Accounts β SAP Business Partners (and back), SFDC Orders β SAP Sales Orders (and back), with BP Numbers, Order Numbers, and Invoice references flowing bi-directionally to maintain a single source of truth across both platforms.
05
Revenue Data Integration for Sales Team Visibility
SAP financial data, including revenue recognition, invoice status, and payment records, was integrated back into Salesforce, giving the sales team real-time revenue visibility, accurate forecasting inputs, and the ability to track order-to-cash progress directly within their CRM environment.
06
Validation, Exception Management & Production Go-Live
Comprehensive validation rules were implemented across all integration flows to reject, quarantine, or flag records that failed data quality checks. UAT was conducted with the client's IT and business teams before a zero-downtime production cutover, followed by a hypercare period ensuring full system stability.

Lower IT & Support Costs
πΊοΈMap the full O2C process before building. Deep business process mapping upfront saved weeks of rework and uncovered edge cases that would have caused production failures
πBi-directional sync demands idempotency. Every integration touching both systems needed careful loop-prevention and conflict resolution to avoid cascading update cycles
β»οΈModular frameworks pay back quickly. Shared logging, error handling, and retry modules reduced build time for each new integration process by over 40%
πRevenue visibility changes sales behaviour. Real-time SAP data in Salesforce fundamentally improved forecast accuracy and reduced the sales-finance reconciliation cycle to near zero
