Overview
How a US Insurance Aggregator Automated Multi-Carrier Quote Retrieval with MuleSoft
A US-based insurance aggregator acts as a marketplace connecting users and agents with multiple insurance carriers — offering coverage across Home, Auto, Jewellery, Dwelling, Flood, and Life insurance lines. The business model depends on the ability to rapidly collect minimal user details and simultaneously retrieve competitive quotes from all relevant carriers in real time.
Without automation, this process was manual, slow, and error-prone — limiting the platform's ability to scale and deliver the instant, seamless quote experience users expected. TGH implemented a MuleSoft API-led integration architecture on CloudHub — connecting Salesforce, Postgres, and all Carrier APIs into a unified, automated, and fully governed quote orchestration engine.
With TGH's MuleSoft integration, our users now get insurance quotes from all carriers in a single click. The API-led architecture gives us the modularity to add new carriers and lines of business rapidly, and CloudHub's scalability means we're ready for whatever growth comes next.
Problem Statement
A Multi-Carrier Quote Platform Without Automation Was Unsustainable
The client's core business model — aggregating quotes from multiple insurance carriers for users and agents — required a highly orchestrated, real-time integration capability that simply didn't exist. The operational gap between what the business promised users (instant quotes across all carriers) and what the technology could deliver (manual, fragmented processes) was widening as the platform tried to scale.

Each of these lines required a different carrier API integration — with unique authentication, payload schemas, error handling requirements, and response formats. Without a governed integration layer, every new carrier or product line demanded bespoke development, creating technical debt and slowing the business's ability to expand its marketplace.
Our Solution
A MuleSoft API-Led Architecture Orchestrating All Carriers from a Single Platform
TGH implemented a MuleSoft API-led integration architecture — organising all integrations into Experience, Process, and System API layers for maximum modularity, reusability, and maintainability. The solution was deployed on MuleSoft CloudHub for elastic scalability, with asynchronous processing enabling non-blocking carrier API calls for a responsive user experience regardless of carrier response times.
🔗
Integrated with various touchpoints to achieve full platform functionality — connecting Salesforce CRM, Postgres Database, Digital Agent interfaces, and all Carrier APIs through a single governed integration layer
🏗️
Implemented API-led architecture to achieve a modularised approach — separating Experience APIs (user-facing), Process APIs (business logic), and System APIs (carrier connections) for independent development and reuse
⚠️
Implemented an error handling mechanism to provide clients insight into errors and deliver customized, actionable messages to users — replacing raw system errors with user-friendly notifications across all carrier integrations
☁️
Leveraged CloudHub to enhance scalability and flexibility in business operations — enabling elastic scaling of MuleSoft runtime workers to handle peak quoting demand without infrastructure management overhead
⚡
Implemented Asynchronous processing to enhance the user experience — carrier API calls are executed in parallel and asynchronously, so users receive responses from the fastest carriers immediately rather than waiting for all to complete sequentially
📊
Implemented alerts to deliver visibility into the performance of all API resources — real-time monitoring alerts ensure the operations team is notified immediately if any carrier API degrades or fails
🔒
Enforced policies to enhance the security and reliability of the APIs — including rate limiting, IP whitelisting, OAuth 2.0, and threat protection policies applied consistently across all carrier and system API connections
💡
MuleSoft's API-led connectivity pattern was the architectural decision that made this solution future-proof. Adding a new insurance carrier now means building a single new System API — the Experience and Process layers require no changes, dramatically reducing the time and cost of expanding the carrier network.
Implementation
A Structured Four-Phase Delivery from API Design to Production Automation
Phase 1
Discovery & API Design
Phase 2
System & Process APIs
Phase 3
Experience API & Testing
01
Discovery, Process Mapping & API-Led Architecture Design
TGH conducted a full discovery of the client's carrier network, quoting workflows, and data touchpoints — mapping the complete flow from user/agent input through carrier API calls to quote response. The API-led architecture was designed across three layers: Experience APIs (user/agent-facing), Process APIs (quote orchestration and business rules), and System APIs (individual carrier connections, Salesforce, and Postgres) — ensuring maximum modularity from day one.
02
Carrier System APIs — Building Each Insurance Line Integration
Individual MuleSoft System APIs were built for each carrier across all six lines of business: Home, Auto, Jewellery, Dwelling, Flood, and Life. Each System API handled the carrier's unique authentication, request transformation, response mapping, and error handling — wrapping the complexity of each carrier behind a consistent, reusable interface that the Process API layer could call uniformly.
03
Salesforce & Postgres System API Integrations
MuleSoft System APIs were built for Salesforce (reading agent and customer data, writing quote results) and Postgres (storing quote history, user profiles, and carrier responses). Both integrations were built with full error handling, retry logic, and data validation — ensuring the CRM and database always reflect an accurate, consistent record of every quote interaction.
04
Process & Experience APIs — Asynchronous Quote Orchestration
The Process API was built to orchestrate simultaneous, asynchronous calls to all relevant carrier System APIs — collecting responses in parallel and aggregating results into a single, unified quote response. Asynchronous processing ensured users received the fastest carrier responses immediately, with slower carriers appending to the result as they completed. The Experience API exposed this capability through a clean, versioned API contract for the client's agent and digital interfaces.
05
Policy Enforcement, Alerts & CloudHub Go-Live
Security policies were applied across all APIs — rate limiting, OAuth 2.0, threat protection, and IP whitelisting — through MuleSoft Anypoint's API Manager. Real-time operational alerts were configured for latency thresholds, error rate spikes, and carrier API availability. Production deployment to CloudHub was executed with zero-downtime, and the client's team was trained on Anypoint monitoring for ongoing operational management.

The complete insurance quote business flow — from user input to multi-carrier response — is now fully automated with no manual touchpoints or intervention required
🔄
Data Synchronization
Real-time, bidirectional data sync across Salesforce, Postgres, and all carrier systems ensures every platform reflects a consistent, up-to-date record of quotes and customer interactions
🏦
Unified Customer Data
All customer, agent, and policy data is unified across the integration layer — eliminating siloed records and giving every team a single, complete customer profile
🔭
360° View of Customers
With quote history, carrier responses, and customer interactions all flowing through the MuleSoft platform, the business has a complete view of every customer journey from first quote to policy conversion
🏗️API-led layers unlock future scale — Separating Experience, Process, and System APIs meant adding a new carrier required only a new System API — no changes to the orchestration or user-facing layers
⚡Async processing = user experience wins — Parallel asynchronous carrier calls meant the fastest responses appeared immediately, rather than users waiting for the slowest carrier to respond before seeing any results
🔒Policy-first API governance — Enforcing security policies at the API Manager layer (not within individual integrations) made governance consistent, auditable, and easy to update across all carriers at once
☁️CloudHub removes the infrastructure burden — Deploying on CloudHub meant the team focused entirely on integration logic and business outcomes, with elastic scaling handled automatically at the platform level
